Good Student Letting Areas in Oxford for Pubs and Bars
With little doubt, one of the first things on your to-do list when you begin letting in Oxford will be to explore the many varied drinking establishments and fine food houses of Oxford.
In line with your priorities, we shall consider drink first. Oxford is famous for its numerous pubs and bars, and there are venues for every strudent’s taste. Quintessentially, there are many old, queer (and often small!) pubs, full of character. On St Giles, just opposite from St. Johns college you will find The Lamb and Flag, which serves great good and while from the front does not appear very large, it goes back and back, including even a modern conservatory at the rear.
The White Horse on Broad Street is another student favourite. Surely the narrowest pub in Oxford, it serves great food in large portions and has plenty of character (as does the landlord!), although it can get very busy at times.
The Bear (hidden on a side street behind NatWest on the High Street) lays claim to Oxford’s oldest pub, established in 1242. As what can only be a direct consequence of Oxford’s much smaller population in those times, this pub is absolutely tiny and is often crowded in the evenings. Do not let this put you off – popularity can only be earned!
The infamous ‘Turf’ is perhaps one of the most recommended and loved student pubs, and despite being very central (just off Hollywell Street), it is complete inaccessible by road. This makes it the number 1 candidate pub to take your mates from Leeds Uni to when they come down to see ‘oldee’ Oxford! Good luck finding it...
Despite a wealth of tradition, Oxford is also home to some more conventional pubs. The Kings Arms on the corner of Broad Street and Hollywell Street is one of the largest, and also busiest, student pubs – perhaps because it serves until midnight. Many a night may be spent in The Turf followed by the KA for that extra hour of drinking...
The Three Goats Heads, just by the Oxford Union is another great venue. As well as the usual liquor, it serves a wide-range of unusual ales which are very reasonably priced. Another advantage to this pub is that it is not often busy (a consequence of two floors!).
The Tavern on St Aldates is well worth a visit: it offers very cheap pints, and in addition gives a further student discount! By the bus station, The Goose serves cheap food (many dishes £3) and probably the cheapest pints you’ll find outside of the college bars.
George Street, in the heart of town, features popular chain bars such as O’Neils. It is also home to Copa, a large and modern bar specialising in imported beers (shipping of which, judging by the prices, must be very expensive!). Further down, towards the train station, The Oxford Retreat is very plush with a smart atmosphere and great-shaped beer glasses. Obviously you pay for the privilege!
Thirst, and Anuba Bar, both on Park End Street are impressive, student-priced cocktail bars. Well worth a visit, they are convenient pre-Lava Ignite drinking establishments, while Thirst boasts live DJs and Anuba sports a fantastic modern atmosphere. Baby Bar, off of the high street, is similar and also creates a great ambience, although it is slightly smaller and more expensive.
Moving further out of town, Cowley, the largest student area, has its own wealth of pubs. Of particular mention are the Hobgoblin (opposite Tescos), which is very reasonably priced, the Bullingdon Arms which is right next door and features live music, and the genuine Jamaican-owned, Jamaican-filled bar on St. Clements road.
Jericho student accommodation is probably the most desirable, as the houses are generally nicer than in other areas, although of course you pay for this. In Jericho there are a wide range of pubs and bars, including two excellent cocktail bars on Little Clarendon Street.
