When you get to Oxford it is well worth spending some time getting to know the city and the attractions on offer (this guide should give you some starting points). You’ll end up so busy in the weeks after Fresher’s week that if you get a chance, Freshers’ week is the perfect opportunity to explore Oxford. Certainly you must make sure to find the legendary Turf Tavern
shortly after you arrive at Oxford!
As you settle in to your time at Oxford, it is not uncommon to feel homesick and to miss your friends from back home (best resolution: buy an expensive mobile contract with lots of minutes!). But, there is lots of support available to you at Oxford. First, your new friends will almost definitely feel the same way and understand, so talk to them about your worries. If you really find you are struggling, then you will most likely have been assigned a college advisor who you can talk things through with (although this is often not well publicised, so ask other students or somebody at college to find out more). Many colleges run peer support programs, and the University also runs a counseling service through the student union (OUSU).
One of the hardest things to get used to at Oxford is the amount of work you feel you need to do. The best advice is just to persevere; by the end of your first term you will have found a regular routine that works for you, and the level of work will feel perfectly manageable (although when you find out your friends at other universities are only writing two essays per ten-week term you may not be best pleased!). Remember your tutors are not expecting great works from you in your first few weeks, they just want to see evidence that you have applied yourself and taken the time to think about the topic (it doesn’t matter if your thinking is all wrong!).
