Freshers’ Week for Students Living and Letting in Oxford
Freshers’ week is well organised by all the colleges and provides an excellent introduction to student life at Oxford and a great opportunity to meet your fellow students. A programme of events is put on by the college’s students to introduce you to the social life (clubbing!)
at Oxford, and presentations from college officials will give you all the basics of college life and your studies.
Freshers’ week is one of the best weeks you will have at Oxford, so, once you have found somewhere to rent next year, make sure you make the most of it!
The evenings generally comprise of club nights organised by students at your college to introduce all freshers to the best places to drink (followed by as many as the second and third year students who can get tickets!). Alternative activities are often provided, but if not there are plenty of things you can do in Oxford (check out the rest of this guide to get you started).
Student Health and Welfare
During the day, you will typically receive a few presentations from your college about what is expected of you in your academic studies, the arrangements for doctors and dentists should you ever need one, and general welfare issues. For the rest of the time you’ll probably be out exploring the hundreds pubs found in every street of Oxford (it is rumoured that there are more pubs per square mile in Oxford than anywhere else in England!). The great thing about Oxford is that if it all gets too much for you, you can simply retreat to the peace of your college’s gardens/lawns.
There is no need to be at all apprehensive: everyone is very supportive and you’ll be so busy you won’t even have a chance to think! In addition, most colleges assign each fresher a ‘buddy’ from the second year who you can turn to with any questions you may have.
Remember everyone is new and looking to make new friends so relax, be yourself and have fun!
